This is how Google is killing the Web

On our Desktops & Smart-devices, everything is just one touch away. So why on the browser do we solely rely on Search?

For the past 7 years I have been on an ongoing search to present the best new sites, services & apps to my readers. Every week I find at least one site that blows my mind. I get excited about how this service could evolve into something big, it’s potential to grow into a billion dollar business, and how it can change the face of the Internet.

But you won’t find these great sites on the first page of Google results—you might not find them on the first 10. As a result, these services, some of them genuinely life-changing, get lost in the dark recesses of the Internet. Even when you find these gems, you probably won’t think to access them the next time you log on. Their biggest challenge is finding a large enough audience to create a habit around their product.

Creating a habit around a product is limited by the way we browse the Web.

Take a moment and think about the browser user experience. It hasn’t changed much in the past 20 years and since the days of Netscape, we’ve been confined to a search box. We need to know exactly what we’re looking for, either through a search or by typing in the exact web address.

This experience is based on an intention, one that is transformed into a search query. But what happens when we don’t have a specific intention in mind? These moment of non-intention define our daily Internet routine.

How many times a day do you procrastinate with one of the big services available to you? Whether it’s Facebook or Twitter, NYTimes or HuffPost you’re limited to only the “top of mind” services that pop into your head at that specific moment. When we want to shop online, one or two sites pop into our mind. When we’re looking for news, a few publications pop into our mind. With any given topic, you can usually think of one or two services that provide it.

But what about the hundreds of other websites available in that specific topic? While you certainly don’t need hundreds of options, it’s useful to branch out and explore different directions (especially when they are just a few clicks away). Even when we do find useful alternatives to our tried-and-true sites, it’s difficult to form a habit and start using them more often.

This habit is formed by bookmarking the site, adding it to a list, sending an email to yourself about the site, sharing it on Twitter, or whatever you do to try and save an interesting service. No matter what you do, when you need it, you can’t find it. You are still limited.

Lets say you came across an interesting website for boutique hotels called ‘Stayful’. You save and share it somewhere online. A few months later, you have a trip to plan. Now begins the search through endless lists in order to find that one service whose name you can’t even remember. This is no easy feat for most people.

This is where Google reaps the benefits. Chances are, you won’t find this site again while searching for a keyword such as “boutique hotels”. You start refining the search, all the while seeing tons of ads and maybe you even click on a few. Google makes a profit. Sounds legit right?

One might say, including me, that Google provides such a great service. I don’t mind if they make a profit over it. Of course… but what I ask for, don’t force me into searching, provide me with an easy way to access my Web.

Just take a brief look at all of our smart devices.

On our desktops. Every application is just a click away…

On our tablets, all our apps are just one touch away.

On our smartphones, just a touch away…

So why on the browser are we confined to a search box?

The browser experience is deliberately forcing us into searching everything. These browsers make most of their profit by keeping this experience alive. So, who cares? The ones who care are the millions of startups, businesses and content providers out there, trying to get the world’s attention.

Apple, Google & Microsoft built amazing app stores for mobile and desktop. They made it as simple as possible for their users to access these products. However, on the Web, they don’t have control over what we are doing. So they provide us with a lousy experience. Forcing the user to only a handful of websites that he can remember by heart.

Due to the difficulty in marketing a Web product, developers turn to the platforms provided by these companies because they offer an “easier” marketing platform. This provides the companies with full control over these profitable platforms. They control which apps are approved, they control the profits and they control the content.

This control over our lives is dangerous!

Before we look at net neutrality issues over bandwidth, we need to look at our favorite companies and their control over our virtual world. The Web should be an open platform allowing anyone to enjoy and take part in.

We deserve a better browsing experience; an experience as easy and intuitive as we have with our smart devices.

“You affect the world by what you browse.” Tim Berners-Lee

‘This is how Google is killing the Web’ was written by Roy Pessis, co-founder & CTO of Wibki, and was originally published on Medium. It soon became quite viral and got the attention of many tech blogs, including PandoDaily, GeekTime, and more, who featured it on their platform.

Google Says: 8 Days To Remove Murder Scene From Maps

Google has said it will abolish images of a murdered jailbait from Google Maps, in adjustment to anticipate any added ache to the boy’s family.

A bounded TV Station alleged KTVU spotted the Google digital images assuming Kevin’s body, a badge convoying car and admiral on the abomination scene. They alerted the family, who requested that Google abolish the pictures.

Mr Barrera said: “When I see this image, that’s still like that happened yesterday. And that brings me aback to a lot of memories.”

Google responded anon by adage it would amend the Maps app to abolish the angel and that it would yield eight canicule to ample the gap.

Currently there is no ability to address Google digital images.

The case of Kevin Barrera’s annihilation was never solved. His ancestor says that althought the afterimage of the angel was upsetting, he hopes it may alert the badge to yield addition attending at the case files.

Find The Digital Needle: Google Helps You Take On That Haystack

Although Google’s main page remains uncluttered seven years after bursting onto the search engine scene, the company that revolutionized the way people navigate the ’Net offers a lot more than a word search. Some features share space with the Web search engine: News, Froogle, Groups, Images, and Local. But users won’t get a true sense of Google’s grip on the Internet until they click the More link and peruse the search engine’s astonishing list of services and tools.

Want to put your thoughts on display? Google has Blogger. Have to edit some photos? Google has a free tool. Need satellite images of Earth? Complimentary. Want to translate a Web page? No need to leave the ever increasing confines of Google for that feature either. Does this sound familiar yet? Consider the photo-editing, music playing, and Web-surfing tools that reside on your OS, thanks to Microsoft. Of, course, Google also offers its claim to fame, the Google search engine, free to general users.

Feeling Lucky?
You’ll find most of Google’s search engines on the main page. By default, the page displays a general Web search, but more specialized engines are only a click away. If you’re interested in a particular news story, for example, you can type your search term into the page’s only field and then click News. Google’s new search engine will scour the Web for relevant articles and then display them in a format similar to the one it uses to display other search results.

Most of the time, you’ll probably click the Google Search button (or press the ENTER key) to start your Web search, but if you want to go straight to the most relevant site Google finds (the site that would otherwise stand at the top of the search results page), simply click the I’m Feeling Lucky button.

On the other hand, users who want to see a full list of search results and want to make sure they’re using the best search terms can find some great options in the Advanced Search area, which is one of the few sections
of the Web site that boasts a link from the main page. This section offers special fields that help users better describe what they’re looking for. Keep in mind that each engine has a unique Advanced Search section.

I Need More, More, More…
If you’re looking for Google’s other services and tools, click the More link on the main page. As with the main page, the More, More, More section is relatively clutter-free, so you won’t have much trouble tracking down the item you’re after. Although many features reside on this page, one particularly popular service isn’t present. Google’s Gmail, a beta email service that offers users more than 2GB of email storage, doesn’t have a link on either main page or the More, More, More section. You can access Gmail’s main page at gmail.google.com, but you’ll need an invitation to register an account.

Google Growth
Google’s main page rarely gains or sheds links, but Google pages may change as the company adds new tools. Although our graphics and descriptions are accurate as we go to print, you may discover some changes by the time you read this issue. Also, the titles of some of Google’s new features include “Beta,” which means they’re still at some (advanced) testing stage. That said, don’t ignore a Google tool simply because you’re waiting for the official release. After all, Gmail Beta has been around since 2004, and Froogle Beta started in 2002.

Internet Explorer 9 Beta; A Barebones, Browsing Beauty

When Internet Explorer 9’s interface was finally revealed at a recent event dubbed “Beauty of the Web,” analysts noted the barebones aspect of the four previous IE9 Platform Previews. But who would have guessed the leanness was a harbinger of the browser’s actual user interface?

IE has become the most pared-down browser—but that’s not the whole story. Web pages take the center role, with new options like pinned sites. And IE9 joins the JavaScript speed team, revving up performance in other ways with graphics hardware acceleration. Finally, IE9 has become a “modern” browser (to use competitors’ term), by supporting new Web coding techniques like HTML5, CSS3, Canvas, and SVG.

With its new user interface, IE9 innovates in ways that give pre-eminence to sites and the OS rather than the browser itself. Its pinned-tabs feature gives sites parity with apps, and when you drag tabs out, the resulting window behaves like a standard Windows 7 window, including Aero Snap functionality. This emphasis on Windows 7 behavior is exactly why XP users get left in the dust; IE9 works only on Win 7 and Vista.

The default configuration of IE9’s top UI border actually takes up the least screen real estate of any major browser, leaving the most space for Web pages. To achieve this, everything is in one row below the window border—the back and forward buttons,

tabs, control buttons, and the combined address/search bar, or OneBox. IE9 has taken Chrome’s lead on combining these two functions, but IE claims its version is more protective of your privacy, by letting you turn on and off the autosuggest feature of your search engine at will.

Internet Explorer now has a download manager, finally, and it’s nonintrusive. Its window shows you the percent complete, lets you go to the download folder, run, or view all downloads. You can choose to Run, Save, or Save and Run when you download—

nice options to keep track of your installers.

When it comes to performance, IE is no longer a second-class citizen. JavaScript
performance is a key speed benchmark, one that gets a lot of ink thanks to Chrome’s still-astounding lead in this area. Previous versions of IE have lagged behind just

about all competitors, but IE9’s new Chakra JavaScript engine brings it right in the midst of the pack. Also, other aspects of page rendering have been accelerated using Graphics hardware directly accessed through DirectX’s Direct2D API. Only Firefox was able to match IE9 Beta’s performance on Microsoft’s (and Firefox’s) demos.

Competition has been good for IE. With the Internet Explorer 9 beta, Microsoft has made great strides on three fronts, speed, standards and simplicity. After over a week’s use, I found the vast majority of sites worked flawlessly. Still, it’s a beta at this point, so we’ll wait before making a decision about our next browser Editors’ Choice.

Firefox 4 Final Available

Firefox 4 has been a long time in the making but tomorrow (March 22, 2011) it will finally bid farewell to the protracted development process once and for all. If for some odd reason some of you simply can’t bear the wait any longer, you can download the final version a day in advance.

While the latest stable build according to the official Firefox site is still version 3.6.15, the final FF 4.0 build is available from the Mozilla releases FTP server. But that doesn’t mean you should go ahead and download it from there. Please be mindful of the fact that these FTP servers are not meant to cope with the heavy download traffic that usually accompanies a major Firefox release.

That said, you can download the Windows, Mac OS X and Linux versions of the final release from a site like FileForum without worrying about crippling the Mozilla releases FTP server. At the time of writing, the browser has already been downloaded over 80,000 times from the site.
