Closer than ever... The million-to-one black and white twins Kian and Remee turn seven

One is black and has big brown eyes. The other is a blue-eyed blonde with the palest of skin. They might share the same cheeky smile, but side by side, they could hardly look less alike. Yet remarkably, Kian and Remee are twins, born a minute apart.

The pair owe their appearance to a one in a million combination of their parents’ genes.  Mother Kylee Hodgson and father Remi Horder both have white mothers and black fathers. The startling result is a two-tone set of delightful little girls.  They first attracted international attention when they were featured in the Mail at less than a year old.

Now, approaching their seventh birthday, they have never asked why they don’t look the same, nor have they ever experienced any racial prejudice.

‘They are such a perfect example of how it should be,’ their mother told the Mail. ‘They are not bothered about their skin colour. It’s not the big issue everyone else seems to see it as. It isn’t important to them at all – it’s about what they’re like underneath.’

Kian and her 60-second older sister were delivered in April 2005 by caesarean section.

Kylee, now 25, recalls the moment she saw them for the first time: ‘I noticed that both of them had beautiful blue eyes,’ she said.

‘But while Remee’s hair was blonde, Kian’s was black and she had darker skin. To me, they were my kids and they were just normal. I thought they would start to look the same as time went on.’
Time, however, only accentuated their differences. Kian’s eyes changed colour and her skin got darker. Remee’s complexion got lighter and her curly hair stayed blonde. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Kylee found herself fielding questions about whose children they were, or who Kian’s fair-haired friend was, when she pushed them in their side-by-side buggy.

‘People would ask me why I dressed the children the same,’ Kylee said. ‘I’d just say: “because they’re twins,” and leave people to work it out. It kind of irritated me at first, but everyone in my area got to know they were twins and accepted it. It was only strangers or outsiders who didn’t know.’  Although they share a common bond, the twins are already doing things their own way.

Their appearance may be ebony and ivory, but in character they are chalk and cheese. They learned to walk and talk at different times, even though their first word – ‘Juice!’ – was identical.  Kian, according to her mother, ‘is a bit bossier, a bit louder’. She added:  ‘Remee is a bit more laid back. She’ll think a bit longer before she does something.’

Today they are in different classes at school and have different sets of friends.  They both love dancing and sing along to the same records – mostly New York rapper Nicki Minaj and pop star Rihanna.

But their interests are different, Kian has a love of animals and her sister enjoys cookery. Like many twins though, they have an unspoken, almost intuitive affinity.  ‘They get on so well,’ said Kylee, now separated from Remi and living in Dudley, West Midlands.  ‘They’re really close,’ she said. ‘They’re best friends – they absolutely love each other. They play together all the time, go swimming together, read their books together, help each other out.  ‘If one can’t do their shoes, the other will help.  'Sometimes they do the same things at the same time. Once, they even sneezed together. That really made me laugh.
‘As they’ve got older, they’ve taught each other everything. They’ve helped each other to grow.
‘And they don’t notice the colour thing, not at all. They’ve grown up with light-skinned people around them, and they’ve grown up with black people. But they’re just themselves. They don’t see what everyone else sees.’

Bizarre "King of Wasps" Found in Indonesia

A new kinds of massive, venomous wasp has been found on the Indonesian isle of Sulawesi (map), experts say.

The two-inch-long (five-centimeter-long) dark-colored glitches are surrounded in mystery—all of the wasp kinds found so far have been deceased.

"I'm not certain any specialist has ever seen one in existence, but they are very bizarre-looking," said research co-author Ruby Kimsey, an entomologist at the School of Florida, Davis, who co-discovered the pest.

"It's the excessive edition of the [larrine wasp] subfamily they fit in with."

Larrine wasps generally dig nests for their egg and egg in start, exotic places. The grownups develop no more than an inches (2.5 centimeters)—making the recently found Megalara garuda the "king of wasps," according to the research writers.

Wasp Males' Spiky Jaws

Female M. garuda wasps look like most other wasp kinds, but the men develop lengthy, sickle-shaped lips.

The males' compressed encounters and huge, rised lips may be brilliant modifications to secure a nesting that contains prone egg, she recommended.

"Other wasps of the same kinds often rob burrows for meals, and parasitic organisms try to get in there, too," she said. "There's a serious benefits to having the nesting covered. This may be how the men allows assurance his paternal."

In common, "we don't know what this wasp does," Kimsey said. "But it probably for its egg grasshoppers or katydids, like other wasps in its subfamily."

"Mythical" Wasp Under Threat

Kimsey and co-author Eileen Ohl, of Berlin's Humboldt School, found their first look of the new wasp in Indonesia's Art gallery Zoologicum Bogoriense, where the glitches had been kept kept in storage space since 1930. Ohl also found unfamiliar kinds at the Humboldt Art gallery in Germany.

On a 2009 trip, the group found more wasps at a chocolate village in the south eastern hills of Sulawesi. In labeling M. garuda, the group seemed to the nationwide icon of Indonesia: a legendary half-human, half-bird being in the Hindu belief known as Garuda.

Although as many as a number of million kinds of glitches may stay on Sulawesi, Kimsey thinks "only 50 percent have brands."

But the fates of these species—including the recently found wasp—are in danger. Since the Sixties jungles in the location have been significantly equalized to flower several kinds of plants. (Read about rainforest risks.)

"The position where we gathered wasps is scheduled to be an open-pit dime my own," Kimsey said.

"Just considering it creates me tired to my abdomen."

Giant Solar Tornado Caught in NASA Video

A creature "tornado" big enough to take a number of Worlds has been spied on the sun, according to astronomers who examined latest images from NASA's Solar Characteristics Observatory.

Known as solar prominences, such tornado-like components have been noticed on the sun for many. But the newest solar tornado is one of the greatest yet seen—and likely the first to be shot in high-resolution at several wavelengths.

"The framework is huge ... and the swiftness of the content is several countless numbers to tons of miles each time," said Xing Li, an uranologist at Aberystwyth School in Wales, who co-authored a new research reporting the vortex.

"It is a actual gem of a celebration to flame the imagination—and it is a excellent way to research magnet components in the sun's environment."

Solar Spirals Often Erupt

Visually, the 124,000-mile-tall (200,000-kilometer-tall) solar tornado appears like one of its Earthly alternatives, Li said. But the sun storm was designed by an entirely different procedure.

On World, twisters type when a increasing pillar of heated, wet air begins spinning due to extreme wind flow shear associated with huge severe stormy climate.

The rms titanic solar activities, meanwhile, are due to spiral-shaped magnet components that increase from the sun and are centered to the solar exterior at both stops.

A sun storm begins when a huge shot of plasma—charged, superheated gas—happens to photograph up one of the structure's thighs. The lcd is taken along the helical appearance of the structure's magnet area, providing increase to a consistent spinning of content, Li said.

While this particular sun storm didn't generate any lcd breakouts, other kinds of solar prominences are often seen to become amazingly, submitting massive environment of energized contaminants traveling off into area.

When these electronically energized environment, known as coronal huge ejections (CMEs), are targeted at World, the solar contaminants can affect both ground- and space-based technological innovation and can lead to vibrant aurora shows.

"We do not comprehend yet why this particular occurrence provided us such a amazing display for several time [but] did not become," Li said.

"Perhaps this is unusual, but it's perhaps the point that most such components are risky and become as CMEs [that] is the purpose we don't usually see many solar tornadoes."

Sun Tornado's Heavenly, Unusual Dance

Ultimately, Li considers further research of solar tornadoes will help experts comprehend area climate and the causes of area stormy climate in common.

"It is the great thing about this storm which has got us—the ethereal, strange flow of blobs of lcd stuck in the sun's snarled magnet area," Li said.

"When we saw this occurrence, we were surprised and were immediately connected. We are now placing every attempt into knowing what we were seeing."

Starry Show

The ATREX atmosphere lit up up the predawn air as far away as Western Chester, California, as seen in a taken taken by homeowner Jeffrey Berkes, about 180 kilometers (290 kilometers) from the release website.

"Once caffeine type tracers from the rockets were launched, the perspective was awesome," viewer Bryan Lauber of Frenchtown, New Nj, informed Spaceweather.com.

"The tracers were incredibly shiny and seemed to just drop out of the sky!"

An ATREX explode raises off from NASA's Wallops Journey Ability in Va Thursday day. The first explode launched at 4:58 a.m. ET. Each following explode then took off 80 a few moments apart.

Two of the rockets launched their tracers over the Wallops facility, while the other three designed atmosphere in a range over the start Ocean. The multirocket research permitted experts to monitor the jet river gusts of wind thousands of kilometers out—the furthest explode made it from the U.S. Eastern Shore almost to Barbados (map), NASA says.

The chemical type tracer used in the ATREX objective, called trimethyl metal, is a soft ambiance as it responds with the weather, making the weather easier to see.

The products of caffeine type response are metal oxide, co2, and water vapor—three ingredients found in the weather, NASA says. According to the space agency, caffeine type has been employed for decades in explode studies.

For the research, NASA had digital cams taking from seaside features at Wallops, in New Nj, and in Northern Carolina.

The releases and the rocket-created atmosphere were also said to be seen as far southern region as Wilmington, Northern Carolina; western to Charlestown, West Virginia; and as far north as Zoysia, New You are able to, NASA says.

One of the ATREX atmosphere, as seen by a NASA photographic camera. Each reasoning survived for about 20 minutes, giving objective experts time to track the rocket-made atmosphere and evaluate how quickly they shifted away from each other.

Researchers will now use the gathered data to style the type of disturbance that prevails in the higher jet river.

Three-dimensional disturbance, for example, is just like what's seen circulating in estuaries and rivers and gusting in exterior gusts of wind. This type of preparing would mean that Global high-level gusts of wind are controlled by regulations of movement just like those that create small-scale swells in water, NASA says.

But it's also possible the great gusts of wind are decided by two-dimensional disturbance, assisting a style based on quicker, more consistent channels of air.

Oldest Alien Planets Found—Born at Dawn of Universe

Two large exoplanets found revolving about a celebrity 375 light-years away are the most well-known peculiar planets yet found, experts say.

With an approximated age of 12.8 million decades, the coordinator star—and thus the planets—most likely established at the beginning of the galaxy, less than a million decades after the big hit.

"The Milky Way itself was not absolutely established yet," said analysis innovator Johny Setiawan, who performed the analysis while at the Max-Planck Institution for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Malaysia.

During public, Setiawan and co-workers found the signatures of the two exoplanets revolving about the celebrity, known as HIP 11952.

Based on the crew's computations, one community is almost as large as Jupiter and finishes an orbit in approximately seven periods. The other community is nearly three periods Jupiter's large and has an orbital interval of nine and a 50 % several weeks.

It's possible the exoplanets are much youthful than they seem if the planets established lengthy after their celebrity was born—but such a situation is unlikely, the group says.

"Usually exoplanets type just soon after the celebrity creation," Setiawan said. "Second-generation exoplanets might also type after a celebrity has passed away, but this is still under controversy."

Ancient Planets Repel Theory

Setiawan and co-workers found the historical exoplanets using a strategy known as radial swiftness, in which astronomers await regular shakes in a star's lighting due to the gravitational pulls of revolving about planets.

The development indicates that community creation in the beginning galaxy was possible despite the point that celebrities on the market returning then were metal-poor—the astronomy phrase for celebrities missing in components bulkier than hydrogen and helium.

In the situation of HIP 11952, "its metal large quantity is only about one % that of our sun," Setiawan said.

The concept of exoplanets popping from such a outstanding cosmetics operates reverse to a commonly recognized concept known as the accumulation style, which says that weighty components are required to type exoplanets.

Even gas leaders like Saturn and Jupiter need weighty components to take appearance, the considering goes, because they are designed upon strong cores.

The accumulation concept has so far been supported up by observations: Most of the planet-harboring celebrities found currently are relatively youthful and have average to great volumes of materials.

But there may be an observational prejudice, Setiawan said: Astronomers may think the accumulation style is appropriate because community seeker have been focusing on mostly youthful, sunlike celebrities.

"To confirm this problem, it is necessary to do a planet-search analysis around [older] metal-poor celebrities," Setiawan said.

Clock Ticking for Oldest Worlds

Despite the newly found planets' durability, it's unlikely the planets will endure for another 13 million decades.

The mother or father celebrity will soon convert into a red large, Setiawan said, one of the last levels of a sunlike star's lifestyle. (Related: "New 'Deep Fried' Planets Found—Survivors of Star Dying.")

During this level, the celebrity will enlarge in dimension and most likely immerse any close by exoplanets.

Solar Eclipses Can (Slightly) Change Weather on Earth

The inky dark areas of solar eclipses can modify circumstances on small machines, according to new analysis of a 1999 complete surpass.

Solar eclipses happen when the celestial satellite moves between World and the sun, producing a large darkness to move across our globe's exterior. (See images from a Jan 2011 solar surpass.)

Meteorologists realized an surpass could reduced circumstances within this darkness by as much as 5 levels F (3 levels Celsius). But they couldn't validate historical reviews of changes in wind flow rate and route attached to the large activities.

"This tale goes back to 1901, when a guy known as H. Helm Clayton believed he saw a modify in the wind flow guidelines due to the surpass," said environmental physicist Giles Harrison of the School of Examining in the U.K.

Clayton released a papers saying there was such a thing as an surpass cyclone—"a cyclone of gusts of wind around the moon's darkness," Harrison said.

Ever since Clayton's declare, historical reviews of eclipse-powered gusts of wind have accumulated, but without effective information to assist the view.

Eclipse's Unusual Winds

Looking to put the problem to relax, Harrison and associate Suzanne Grey, an environmental researcher also at the School of Examining, collected climate information from the direction of an Aug 1999 surpass.

That eclipse's darkness cut across European countries, such as Devon and Cornwall in the U.K.

During the occurrence Harrison was under dark, stormy skies—"the incorrect place at the right time" for seeing minor changes in climate styles. But viewers elsewhere in the nation revealed sensation an odd modify in wind flow route when the surpass took place.

Fortunately, channels across European countries registered a money of climate information under better air.

Gray and Harrison used the pre-eclipse circumstances and computer modelling to make a prediction for that day that did not consideration for the eclipse's darkness. The scientists then in comparison their outcomes to real climate information signed during and after the occurrence.

The evaluation revealed a considerable loss of wind flow rate of about 1.6 kilometers (2.5 kilometers) an time. Winds also blew 20 levels more southerly in the shadowed parts.

"When the surpass impacts heat range, it seems to also cause the wind flow to fall and modify route. This is perhaps what people have said about," Harrison said.

Wind Changes, but No Cyclone

The specialist advised that the new conclusions are not verification of Clayton's full-blown surpass cyclone.

If nothing else, though, the analysis is a great analyze of present-day weather-predicting technological innovation. (Related: "Faster Supercomputers Supporting Weather Anticipates.")

"It's awesome how much information you can get out of a contemporary climate prediction," he said. "There's no style for surpass climate yet, but you could make something to do that."
